Elijah’s appeal to the undecided

Elijah’s appeal to the undecided

“How long halt ye between two opinions?
If the Lord be God, follow him: if Baal, then follow him.”
 1 Kings 18:21

Suggested Further Reading:
 John 13:12-19

I insist that it is your bounden duty,
 if you believe in God,
simply because he is God,
 to serve him and obey him.

I do not tell you it is for your advantage—it may be,
I believe it is—but that I put aside from the question;
I demand of you that you follow God,
 if you believe him to be God.

If you do not think he is God;
if you really think that the devil is God,
then follow him; his pretended godhead shall be your plea,
and you shall be consistent;
but if God be God,
if he made you, I demand that you serve him;
if it is he who puts the breath into your nostrils,
 I demand that you obey him.

If God be really worthy of worship,
and you really think so,
I demand that you either follow him,
or else deny that he is God at all.

Now, professor,
if thou sayest that Christ’s gospel is the only gospel,
if thou believest in the divinity of the gospel,
and puttest thy trust in Christ,
I demand of thee to follow out the gospel,
not merely because it will be to thy advantage,
but because the gospel is divine.

If thou makest a profession of being a child of God,
 if thou art a believer,
and thinkest and believest religion is the best,
 the service of God most desirable,
 I do not come to plead with thee because of any advantage thou wouldst get by being holy;
it is on this ground that I put it,
that the Lord is God;
and if he be God,
it is thy business to serve him.

If his gospel be true, and thou believest it to be true,
it is thy duty to carry it out.

For meditation:

 Four things God will not accept—
hypocrisy (Luke 6:46),
half-heartedness (Luke 9:59-62),
double-mindedness  (James 1:6-8)
and lukewarmness (Revelation 3:15,16).

Fishers Follow Him

Fishers Follow Him

"And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after Me, and I will make you to become fishers of men"
(Mark 1:17).

Only by coming after Jesus can we obtain our heart's desire and be really useful to our fellow men. Oh, how we long to be successful fishers for Jesus! We would sacrifice our lives to win souls.

But we are tempted to try methods which Jesus would never have tried. Shall we yield to this suggestion of the enemy?
If so, we may splash the water, but we shall never take the fish.

We must follow after Jesus if we would succeed. Sensational methods, entertainment, and so forth -- are these coming after Jesus? Can we imagine the LORD Jesus drawing a congregation by such means as are now commonly used? What is the result of such expedients? The result is nothing which Jesus will count up at the last great day.

We must keep to our preaching as our Master did, for by this means souls are saved. We must preach our LORD's doctrine and proclaim a full and free gospel, for this is the net in which souls are taken, We must preach with His gentleness, boldness, and love, for this is the secret of success with human hearts.

We must work under divine anointing, depending upon the sacred Spirit. Thus, coming after Jesus, and not running before Him, not aside from Him, we shall be fishers of men.

The stony heart removed

The stony heart removed

‘I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.’
 Ezekiel 36:26

Suggested Further Reading:
Proverbs 30:7–9

Men who have lost their stony hearts are afraid of sin,
 even before sin they are afraid of it. The very shadow of evil across their path frightens them.

The temptation is enough for them, they flee from it as from a serpent; they would not dally and toil with it, lest they should be betrayed.

Their conscience is alarmed even at the approach of evil, and away they fly; and in sin, for even tender hearts do sin, they are uneasy.

As well might a man seek to obtain quiet rest on a pillow stuffed with thorns, as the tender conscience get any peace while a man is sinning.

And then, after sin—here comes the pinch—the heart of flesh bleeds as though it were wounded to its very core. It hates and loathes and detests itself that ever it should have gone astray.

Ah, stony heart, you can think of sin with pleasure, you can live in sin and not care about it; and after sin you can roll the sweet morsel under your tongue and say, ‘Who is my master? I care for none; my conscience does not accuse me.’

 But not so the tender broken heart.
Before sin, and in sin, and after sin, it smarts and cries out to God. So also in duty as well as in sin, the new heart is tender.

Hard hearts care nothing for God’s commandment; hearts of flesh wish to be obedient to every statute.
‘Only let me know my Master’s will and I will do it.’

 The hearts of flesh when they feel that the commandment has been omitted, or that the command has been broken, mourn and lament before God.

Oh! there are some hearts of flesh that cannot forgive themselves, if they have been lax in prayer, if they have not enjoyed the Sabbath day, if they feel that they have not given their hearts to God’s praise as they should.

For meditation:

The tender heart before sin (Genesis 39:7–12),
in sin (Romans 7:14–25) and after sin (Psalm 51:1–5).
God will not despise a broken and contrite heart (Psalm 51:17). Spurgeon asks, ‘Have you, dear friends, such a heart of flesh as this?’

The God of the aged

The God of the aged

“Even to your old age I am he;
and even to hoar hairs will I carry you:
I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry,
and will deliver you.”
Isaiah 46:4

Suggested Further Reading:
Psalm 71:1-18

Middle aged man! Listen to what David says, again,
“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.”

Go on, then, unsheath your sword once more.
“The battle is the Lord’s;”
 leave your declining years to him,
and give your present years to him.

Live to him now,
and he will never cast you away when you are old.
Do not lay up for old age and keep back from the cause of God; but rather trust God for the future.

Be “diligent in business;”
but take care you do not hurt your spirit,
 by being too diligent, by being grasping and selfish.
Remember you will
“Want but little here below, Nor want that little long.”

And lastly, my dear venerable fathers in the faith, and mothers in Israel,
take these words for your joy.
Do not let the young people catch you indulging in melancholy,
sitting in your chimney corner, grumbling and growling,
but go about cheerful and happy,
and they will think how blessed it is to be a Christian.

If you are surly and fretful, they will think the Lord has forsaken you;
but keep a smiling countenance,
and they will think the promise is fulfilled.

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will
I carry you: I have made, and I will bear;
even I will carry, and will deliver you.”

 Do, I beseech you, my venerable friends, try to be of a happy temperament and cheerful spirit, for a child will run away from a surly old man; but there is not a child in the world who does not love his grandfather if he is cheerful and happy.

 You can lead us to heaven if you have got heaven’s sunlight on your face.

For meditation:

Elderly believers—the Bible tells us about their testimony (Psalm 92:14,15; Proverbs 16:31),
their teaching (Titus 2:2,3) and their treatment
(1 Timothy 5:1,2).
note:
This sermon was substantially repeated at Stambourne,
Essex, two days later on the commemoration of the jubilee of Spurgeon’s grandfather, Rev James Spurgeon.

Full Reliance on God

Full Reliance on God

"For He shall deliver the needy when he lieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper"
(Psalm 72:12).

The needy cries; what else can he do? His cry is heard of God; what else need he do? Let the needy reader take to crying at once, for this will be his wisdom.

Do not cry in the ears of friends, for even if they can help you it is only because the LORD enables them. The nearest way is to go straight to God and let your cry come up before Him.

Straightforward makes the best runner: run to the LORD and not to secondary causes.

"Alas!" you cry, "I have no friend or helper."
 So much the better; you can rely upon God in both capacities - as without supplies and without helpers.

Make your double need your double plea.
 Even for temporal mercies you may wait upon God, for He careth for His children in these temporary concerns.

As for spiritual necessities, which are the heaviest of all, the LORD will hear your cry and will deliver you and supply you.

O poor friend, try your rich God.
 O helpless one, lean on His help.
He has never failed me, and I am sure He will never fail you.

Come as a beggar, and God will not refuse you help.
 Come with no plea but His grace.
 Jesus is King; will He let you perish of wants
What! Did you forget this!
